The first Beef CEO Mentoring Program 2-day workshop event was held last week (13-14 October) in Brisbane – and what a resounding success!

Key program presenters and mentors Gordon Stone and Mark McNamee took participants through four of the ABDI 12 Pillars of Business Best Practice, including:

  • Developing your personal and business vision – in other words defining your roadmap
  • Succession – setting up a self-managing business
  • Financial Fundamentals – the key indicators of financial success
  • Products, Markets and Customers – reviewing current markets and considering alternatives.

Participants came from a range of backgrounds, including the organic beef sector, beef industry product suppliers, speciality beef producers and two generations from the one family enterprise also joining in.

Participants addressed key concerns for each of their businesses – including how to manage succession, managing external investors / interested parties, breaking into new markets, and simply needing to fine tune a few “business” related things.

Input from industry specialists

Three industry specialists also presented on related topics, including:

  • Tim Ryan (Livestock and Meat Market Analyst – MLA): providing an update on the domestic and international beef marketplaces including China
  • Brett Collins (Agribusiness Partner – Crowe Horwath [formerly MooreStephens Qld]): financial fundamentals and how to manage financial aspects of succession
  • Damian Street (Corporate Adviser): how to set businesses up for sale and managing investor relationships.

A special guest appearance from Mark – the head chef at Victoria Park Golf Complex – provided practical on-ground insights into the logistics (and opportunities) of engaging with the food service sector.

The group went out to dinner on Thursday night and this provided the opportunity to share some excellent beef dishes while socialising and exchanging ideas amongst participants and presenters.
